Yarmouth is a vibrant town on the western side of the
Island, full of history, tradition and character.

Yarmouth
Nowadays the town is busy with traffic from the Wightlink car ferry terminal, entering and leaving the Island. The main town square exudes a traditional charm, with its cafes, pubs, gift shops and curiosity shops. Nearby at the harbour is Yarmouth Bus Station, where you can catch buses to Newport or Freshwater and beyond.
The town also boasts Britain’s longest timber pier, dating from 1876. For a small toll (to help fund restoration and upkeep) you can walk the 685 foot length. The end of the pier is especially popular with fishermen.

Yarmouth is also a great base from which to venture out and explore the West Wight. The Needles Breezer open top tour leaves the bus station every 30 minutes and takes in some of the most scenic views in the UK, especially at the Needles New Battery. The tour takes you through some great countryside, past the site of the original Isle of Wight Festival of 1970 as well as the bays of Freshwater and Totland.

Built in the 1850s to protect the
Isle from a naval attack,  later used for military training and submarine mining, the single tier barracks and battery now operate as a country park.

The path through the park forms part of the Isle of Wight coastal path, and offers spectacular views of beautiful beaches and imposing cliffs.

In the old fort buildings you will find exciting attractions including a planetarium, a model railway exhibition, and the Underwater Archaeology Centre. In the summer months the rangers offer educational tours of the seashore and woodland, and the marine aquarium is packed with both local and tropical sealife.
