Between Shanklin and Newport lies the picture-perfect village of Godshill. Take a trip here (or even stay a few days) and you’ll soon discover its abundance of charms
and wonders.
At the top of the hill in the village sits its most famous landmark, All Saints Church. The original church was built in the 7th Century when British Christianity was in its infancy.

The legend goes that the villagers started to build the church at the bottom of the hill, but every morning awoke to find the stones had inexplicably moved to the top. The village elders accordingly named the village “God’s Hill” and the original building site “Devil’s Acre”.
The church that stands today was built in the 14th Century, and is thought to be the 4th on the site. Go to see the stained glass window, designed by William Morris’ eldest son, and the medieval mural of Jesus crucified on a lily. Then enjoy the views from the top of the hill.

For a little something out of the ordinary, try Godshill Model Village, with its incredibly detailed 1/10 scale models of Godshill and Shanklin – as they looked in the 1920s.
You’ll find houses, churches, pubs, a model railway, even an airfield – all set within 1 1/4 acres of award winning gardens.
But if all you want to do is just potter around, then you're in the right place too - there's nothing better than taking the opportunity to stroll through one of the prettiest villages
on the island.
on the island.

Thatched cottages (see if you can find the thatched kangaroo!) and carefully tended gardens are everywhere – and if you want to take the weight off your feet, try one of Godshill’s many tea gardens, pubs, or restaurants.
Whatever you decide, you’ll really be spoiled
for choice.

Just a short bus ride from Godshill, on the road to Ventnor, you’ll find the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary. They’ve been caring for unwanted and mistreated animals here for over twenty years. They really work wonders too – see the difference for yourself when you meet these friendly, healthy creatures.

Entry is free, but the Sanctuary relies on donations to continue its work. You can also show your support by buying tickets to their annual Grand Donkey Day Out in August, with live music, food and craft stalls, a bouncy castle, Punch & Judy stall, and
much more.
